The Bicol Getaway

As part of our commitment to continuously produce world class quality graduates, the College of Business, Entrepreneurship, and Accountancy, went to Bicol University for our annual benchmarking. Last year, we visited the University of Sto. Tomas, De Lasalle University and Batangas State University. Benchmarking in schools is a tool that not only allows our school to know where it stands on the global scale, but most important it gives us a chance to improve and to measure this improvement. Once our benchmarking tasks were done, we took advantage of the extra time we had, to visit the different tourist spots in Bicol. The fun begun.

We first visited Mayon Volcano. A visit in Bicol is not complete without catching a captivating view of the world’s most perfect cone. I guess she was letting us stay there much longer because we were only able to see the complete view of the volcano late in the afternoon. We also had our picture-taking in the Cagsawa Ruins. Here, I observed how my friends and other tourists took their most creative poses as they took a picture of the site. To make the visit to Mayon more exciting, we treated ourselves with ATV. For only 350 pesos, you get to be wet and dirty as you go to the trail to go nearer the volcano. After the ATV experience, we got to buy some souvenirs we brought home to our loved ones in the shops nearby.

Bicol is known for its pilinut and we would not want to leave Bicol without bringing home with us products made of pili. We went to Bicol Pilinut Candy to buy the delicious pilinut sweets. They have a wide array of goodies to choose from. Their bestsellers are Mazapan De Pili, Crispy Pili, and Pili Butternuts. You actually get to taste some of their products before you buy them so that will really help you a lot in making decisions on what goodies to buy.

Because of all the activities we did during our visit to Mayon, we felt the need to load up. Our next stop was the 1st Colonial Grill, home of the original Sili Ice Cream. It is very popular for serving traditional Bicolano favorites- Bicol Express, Tinutungang Manok, Pasta Bicolana & Tinapa Rice to name a few. It certainly lived up to its billing as we really enjoyed all the food served to us in the restaurant. We were so satisfied that the next morning, we went back and had our breakfast there before going back to Manila. Up to this moment I’m still craving for their popular dishes.

So there you go, my short but fun-filled visit in Bicol. I certainly would want to visit it again but this time I want to bring my family with me. Here’s hoping that MJ Travel and Tours can offer a package to bring me to one of my favorite destinations, Bicol.
